To stop a toilet from randomly making running water sounds (often called a phantom flush), you need to replace or adjust the leaking tank flapper or correct a high water level. First, remove the tank lid and inspect the rubber flapper; if it is worn out, unhook it and snap a new standard flapper onto the flush valve ears. Second, adjust the float rod or screw on the fill valve downward so the water level stops at least an inch below the top of the overflow tube. Verification: Listen to the tank for 10 minutes to confirm the trickling sound stops entirely.
