Fixing shingles that blew off involves replacing missing shingles and inspecting surrounding shingles for damage. First, ensure safety and document damage with photos for insurance if it was storm related. For a small repair, you can do it yourself if the roof is accessible and low slope. Gather matching replacement shingles, roofing nails, roofing cement, a flat pry bar, hammer, and utility knife. On a warm day when shingles are pliable, carefully lift the shingle above the missing area with the pry bar to break the sealant bond and expose nails. Remove any remaining pieces of damaged shingle and remove nails from the course above that penetrate the missing area. Slide the new shingle into place, aligning it with existing pattern. Nail it with 4 to 6 roofing nails placed about 1 inch above the cutout slots and below the sealant line of the course above. Apply small dabs of roofing cement under the overlapping shingle above to reseal it and press down. Cover any exposed nail heads with cement. If surrounding shingles are creased or have broken sealant, reseal them with cement or replace them as well, as creased shingles lose wind resistance. If damage is extensive, in a valley, or on a steep roof, call a professional roofer. For emergency protection before permanent repair, cover the area with a tarp secured with 2x4s, not nails through the field.
