A good vinyl plank flooring should be at least 5mm to 8mm thick overall, with 20 mil wear layer or thicker, for good durability, comfort, and stability, with premium LVP being 6mm to 8mm thick and 20 to 30 mil wear layer. Total thickness of LVP includes core plus attached pad, with good LVP being 5mm to 8mm thick, where 5mm is minimum for stability and 6mm to 8mm is better for comfort, sound absorption, and dent resistance, costing 2 to 5 dollars per square foot materials. Wear layer thickness is more important than total thickness for scratch resistance, with good vinyl plank having 20 mil wear layer for residential heavy traffic, 28 mil for extra durability, and 30 mil for commercial, where 20 mil is good for most homes with pets and kids, and 30 mil is better for high-traffic and commercial. Budget LVP with 4mm total thickness and 6 mil wear layer is too thin and scratches easily, not recommended. Premium LVP like Shaw Floorte Pro and COREtec Grande are 6mm to 8mm thick with 20 to 30 mil wear layers, offering best durability. LifeProof and SMARTCORE are 6mm to 7mm thick with 20 to 28 mil wear layers, good quality. So good vinyl plank should be at least 5mm thick overall with 20 mil wear layer, ideally 6mm to 8mm thick with 20 to 30 mil wear layer for best durability and comfort.
