Although American University was historically founded by members of the Methodist Church, it operates today as a strictly non-sectarian, secular institution of higher education. The campus community embraces religious pluralism, welcoming students, faculty, and staff from a wide variety of faith backgrounds and worldviews. While active campus ministry organizations, interfaith dialogues, and religious student groups are supported, religion plays no mandatory role in the academic or residential requirements of the student body.
