Under normal dry conditions, there should be little to no standing water in a sump pump basin, typically only a shallow puddle measuring about 1 to 2 inches deep covering the very bottom of the pit. If water level rises higher than 7 to 10 inches during storms, the float switch activates the pump. Having a constantly high water level during dry weather indicates a stuck check valve allowing discharged water to flow back in. Verification: Measure water depth at the bottom of the pit during dry periods to confirm it remains minimal.
