For a standard 2-car garage door, a 1/2 horsepower (or 1/2 HPc equivalent DC motor) is sufficient if your door is lightweight, single-layer steel or aluminum, and properly balanced. However, if your 2-car garage door is heavy, solid wood, insulated with multi-layer steel panels, or oversized, upgrading to a 3/4 horsepower (or higher) motor is strongly recommended to prevent motor strain, overheating, and premature wear on internal drive gears. Verification: Disengage the manual release and test door balance by hand; if it feels heavy, choose a 3/4 HP model.
