After an air conditioner has frozen solid into a block of ice, you should leave the cooling system turned off (while running the fan) for at least 3 to 6 hours, or until every trace of ice has melted completely. Turning your AC back on before the coils are fully thawed will cause remaining ice crystals to instantly refreeze and expand, compounding the blockage. Once fully thawed and after you have replaced a dirty air filter, you can safely turn the cooling mode back on. Verification: Inspect the indoor coils and copper lines to confirm zero frost or ice remains.
