If your residential air conditioner or heat pump evaporator coil has frozen solid into a block of ice, you should leave the system turned off for a minimum of three to four hours, or until all ice has completely melted away. When an AC freezes, ice coats the indoor coil and often extends down to the refrigerant lines and outdoor unit; attempting to restart the system while ice remains present will block all airflow, damage the compressor, and refreeze the coils instantly. To speed up the melting process safely, turn your thermostat mode to "Off" while leaving the indoor blower fan switch set to "On" to force warm room air across the coil and melt the ice faster. Before turning the cooling system back on, you must inspect and replace your dirty air filter, as restricted airflow is the primary cause of frozen coils. You can verify readiness when ice is gone and airflow is restored.
