An air conditioning system typically begins producing cold air almost immediately—usually within two to five minutes—after you finish adding refrigerant, provided the system is operating correctly and the compressor is fully engaged. Once the fresh refrigerant circulates through the closed loop, absorbs heat from indoor air, and passes through the condenser coil, you should notice a noticeable temperature drop at your supply vents or dashboard registers. However, if your system was severely undercharged or if the evaporator coil was completely iced over, it may take thirty to forty-five minutes of continuous runtime for ice to melt completely and normal cooling efficiency to return. You can troubleshoot by monitoring vent temperatures with a digital thermometer. You can verify that the process is successful when supply air temperatures stabilize within the expected cooling range.
