How long does dust stay in your lungs? How long dust stays in lungs depends on type of dust, amount inhaled, and lung health. Small amounts of everyday household dust inhaled are usually cleared quickly by lungs mucociliary system, where tiny hairs called cilia move mucus and trapped particles up to throat to be coughed or swallowed, typically within hours to few days. Larger particles trapped in upper airways cleared within hours. Finer particles that reach deep lung alveoli may take longer, with macrophages engulfing particles and clearing over days to weeks. However, some dust like silica, asbestos, and coal dust is not easily cleared and can remain in lungs for months to years, causing inflammation and scarring leading to diseases like silicosis and asbestosis. In healthy person, most nuisance dust cleared within days, but heavy occupational exposure can lead to long-term retention. So everyday dust stays hours to days, while hazardous mineral dust can stay years and cause damage.
