In thermodynamic, mechanical, and electrical engineering, net power is calculated by taking the total gross power output generated by a turbine, generator, or power plant facility and subtracting the parasitic power consumption—the internal electrical energy required to run auxiliary equipment such as pumps, compressors, cooling systems, and control infrastructure. The resulting figure represents the actual net usable electricity delivered outward to an external transmission grid or local electrical load center.
