Thathed roofs prevent water infiltration through a combination of steep pitch design and the natural water-shedding properties of tightly bundled vegetation like water reeds or straw. Thatch is installed at a minimum pitch of 45 degrees, which allows rainwater to flow rapidly down the sloping exterior surface without penetrating the interior. Each successive layer is densely layered and secured with fixings, so that moisture only wets the outer few inches of the material while the inner core remains completely dry and impermeable.
