Resetting garage door sensors is a simple process that involves power cycling, cleaning, and realigning them to restore the safety beam. Start by unplugging your garage door opener from the power outlet on the ceiling. If your unit has a battery backup, disconnect that as well so there is no power at all going to the system. Leave it unplugged for at least 30 to 90 seconds to let the circuit board fully reset. During this time, go down to the sensors located about six inches off the floor on each side of the door. Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to clean both lenses thoroughly, as dust and spider webs can block the beam. Check that each sensor is mounted securely and that its bracket is not bent. Also check the small low-voltage wires going into the back of each sensor and the white and grey terminals on the back of the motor head to make sure nothing is loose. After inspection, plug the opener and battery back in. The sending sensor should light up yellow or amber immediately. Adjust the receiving sensor by loosening its wing nut slightly and tilting it until its green light becomes solid and bright, then tighten it again. Test the door operation.

To reset garage door sensors properly, you need to do both a power reset and a physical alignment reset to cover all possible faults. Start by closing the garage door manually if possible and unplugging the garage door opener motor unit from the ceiling outlet. If your opener has a battery backup system, open the light cover and disconnect the battery's black and red wire harness. Wait for a full 60 seconds to let the opener's logic board completely lose power and clear any error codes. While you wait, clean both sensor lenses with a soft microfiber cloth and remove any cobwebs, leaves, or boxes that might be blocking the beam path across the floor. Inspect the wires from each sensor all the way to the ceiling for damage. After the minute, reconnect the battery first, then plug the opener back into AC power. The sensors should light up. Now loosen the wing nut on the bracket of the sensor that is blinking or off and slowly move it until its green light becomes solid and steady, not flickering. Tighten the nut without moving the sensor. Test the safety system by closing the door and waving an object through the beam.
