Chandeliers do not fall because they are installed using strong mounting systems designed to support much more weight than the chandelier itself, with multiple safety measures. The key is the electrical box, which must be a fan and fixture rated box that is rated to support 50 to 150 pounds depending on chandelier weight, and this box is securely fastened to structural framing, not just drywall. For light chandeliers under 50 pounds, the box is typically attached to a joist or has a brace bar that spans between two joists in the ceiling, providing solid anchoring. For heavy chandeliers over 50 pounds, a heavy-duty brace with lag bolts into joists or a separate support chain or aircraft cable that goes to a joist is used, sometimes with a hook rated for 100 to 200 pounds. The chandelier itself hangs from a threaded nipple, chain, or rod that screws into the mounting bracket on the box, and the electrical wires are connected with wire nuts inside the box, but the weight is supported by the bracket and chain, not the wires. Installers also use safety cables as secondary support. Building codes require fixture boxes to support chandeliers and be listed for the weight. When installed correctly by an electrician with proper box and bracing into structure, a chandelier can safely support several times its weight without falling.
