Bleach offers only a temporary cosmetic fix for smelly drains and is generally not recommended. While pouring bleach down a drain kills surface bacteria and masks odors momentarily, it fails to penetrate or dissolve the underlying organic slime, grease, and hair biofilm clinging to the pipe walls. Furthermore, bleach is highly corrosive to metal plumbing components, can degrade rubber gaskets, and creates lethal toxic chlorine gas if it mixes with residual acidic cleaners. Verification: Use enzymatic cleaners and mechanical cleaning tools for permanent odor removal.
