Throughout its storied men's basketball history, the Indiana University program has selectively participated in the National Invitation Tournament on rare occasions when left out of the primary NCAA tournament field. Most famously, the Hoosiers captured the NIT championship title back in 1979 under legendary coach Bob Knight, defeating their in-state rival Purdue in the title game held at Madison Square Garden. However, the program's traditional expectations center entirely on competing for NCAA tournament bids and national championships rather than secondary postseason tournament appearances.
