Swimming near or inside a hydroelectric dam is strictly prohibited and extremely dangerous due to powerful hidden undercurrents, violent water turbulence, sudden operation of intake gates, and rapid water level fluctuations caused by turbine generation. The immense suction forces created by water intakes can easily trap swimmers and submerge them, making reservoir exclusion zones and tailrace areas heavily restricted federal safety areas enforced by maritime patrols and warning buoys.
