Putting small amounts of soft lettuce down a garbage disposal is generally acceptable if you run plenty of cold water and feed it in slowly. However, plumbers often advise against disposing of large quantities of leafy greens or stringy salad remnants because flexible lettuce leaves can easily wrap around the internal spinning impeller blades or mat together, creating stubborn clogs or causing the motor to bog down and sluggishly drain.
