Standard toilet paper alone rarely causes a main sewer backup when used in normal quantities, as it is engineered to dissolve rapidly in water. However, excessive quantities of thick multi-ply toilet paper combined with flushed non-flushable items (such as paper towels, disinfecting wipes, cotton swabs, and feminine products) will easily snag on pipe imperfections, grease buildup, or tree roots, forming a dense mass that triggers a severe mainline backup. Verification: Never flush wet wipes or paper towels down the toilet, even if labeled flushable.
