You should avoid using baking soda to clean natural travertine tile, because although it is often recommended as a gentle abrasive for other surfaces, its slightly alkaline nature and particulate abrasiveness can dull the polished or honed finish of soft calcareous stones over time. When mixed into pastes or scrubbed vigorously across travertine, baking soda can create micro-abrasions that ruin the smooth texture. Sticking exclusively to specialized pH-neutral stone cleaners is much safer for preserving your tile.
