You cannot sell your shares on the ex-dividend day and still receive the upcoming dividend payout. To be eligible to receive a declared corporate dividend, an investor must purchase or own the stock before the ex-dividend date. If you sell your shares on or after the ex-dividend day, the buyer of the stock—not you—will receive the dividend distribution, because exchange settlement rules dictate that anyone purchasing on that day is recorded too late for the current distribution registry.
