Under a traditional annual car insurance policy in the UK, you are rarely insured to drive just any car. While older comprehensive policies historically included a "driving other cars" (DOC) extension, this is now exceedingly rare and, if present, strictly limited to third-party only cover for emergencies involving non-owned vehicles with the owner's permission. If you need to drive a car that does not belong to you, you must either be explicitly added as a named driver on that vehicle's policy or purchase a dedicated short-term temporary insurance policy designed for flexible multi-car usage.
