Individual retail investors cannot directly purchase shares of the National Stock Exchange on public stock exchange boards because the NSE itself is currently an unlisted public company. However, investors can acquire its shares in the off-market unlisted and pre-IPO space through specialized institutional dealers, or gain indirect exposure by investing in the various publicly traded commercial banks, public sector undertakings, and financial institutions that hold substantial equity ownership stakes in the exchange.
