A car engine can technically start and run without a transmission attached to the crankshaft, but the vehicle cannot move under its own power. The transmission is the vital mechanical bridge that transfers rotational engine power to the drive wheels; without it, revving the engine simply spins an open crankshaft into the air without propelling the car forward. In automotive manufacturing and repair shops, engines are occasionally bench-tested without transmissions, but practical vehicle operation is impossible.
