A century-old antique piano can technically be tuned, provided its internal wooden and metal structural components remain in sound physical condition. However, a piano of that age frequently suffers from a degraded pinblock that fails to hold tuning pins tightly, rusted strings, or cracked soundboards. If the structural integrity has deteriorated significantly over decades of environmental exposure and temperature swings, a piano technician may require extensive and costly restoration work—such as a complete restanking and repinning—before the instrument can successfully hold a stable standard pitch.
