Zinsco electrical panels, also known as Zinsco Sylvania or GTE Sylvania panels, have never been formally recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, but they are widely considered unsafe and are recommended for replacement by electricians, home inspectors, and safety experts similar to Federal Pacific panels. Zinsco panels were installed in millions of homes from the 1950s to 1980s and have known design flaws including aluminum bus bars that corrode, breakers that can weld or fuse to the bus bar and fail to trip during overloads, breakers that appear off while still energized, and breakers that allow arcing. Independent testing has shown high failure rates where Zinsco breakers do not trip, creating fire hazards. While there was no official CPSC recall, the company went out of business and the panels lost UL listing for many models. Many home inspectors flag Zinsco panels as safety hazards during home sales, and many insurance companies refuse to insure homes with Zinsco panels or require replacement. So while there is no formal recall, the industry consensus is that Zinsco panels should be replaced immediately with modern panels from Square D, Eaton, or Siemens by a licensed electrician, as they are considered a latent fire hazard and no longer meet modern safety standards.
